There are two types of people in this world: the rule followers and the rule-breakers. Everyone knows which camp they raise their flags.
The rule followers are the people who do what they are supposed to do, follow the script to a T, and are promoted for their work as it is always just the way the boss asked to receive it. I admit I fall into this camp. I like structure, plans, and deadlines.
On the other side of the coin, the rule breaker is often termed as disruptive, insubordinate, and termed to “not be a team player.” They are sometimes termed “unpredictable” but are known for the incredible ways they manage to save the day.
However, once climb up the ladder far enough, you discover it isn’t about following the rules you know; it’s about unlearning what you know and finding the right practices that work for you and your organization.
Nevertheless, one must have enough emotional intelligence to know when to quit being a disruptor and align with the team to meet your organizational goals.
What do you need to think about doing differently or unlearn to get yourself to the next level?
For the crowd following the rules, may I suggest “First Break All The Rules” by Marcu Buckingham.
For my rule-breakers, may I suggest “The Ideal Team Player” by Patrick Lencioni.
