Winning is sometimes not what you think it is. As a parent of teens and an 11-year-old, magic moments of everyone getting along don’t always happen at my house. All three of my kids are very different and seeing eye-to-eye on anything is generally an anomaly. However, this week I have had more than one opportunity to see my boys doing something together and even enjoying each other. This is because they found common ground around a game or activity we were doing as a family.
As you head out to fall break or you look at your team this week, think about ways your kids or team members can build better relationships with each other. What opportunities or interactions can you provide to set them up for success? Relationships are built on common ground. How can you help them find it, grow their relationships, and ultimately your results?
Here are three tips:
Align around a shared vision or goal. This could be to have the best vacation, to launch a product successfully, or anything else you need to accomplish together.
Bring a positive attitude to the conversation.
Be open to the other person’s perspective.
Do you have a great story about finding common ground? Feel free to share it. Let’s all get better together!
